We Get What We Choose
In the days since the COVID-19 pandemic began, first there was uncertainty among health experts about the facts of the virus. Then, in every place in the world the health experts have said that to slow the spread of the virus, we’re to wash our hands often, practice social distancing, and wear masks.
Some areas had fierce outbreaks - China, Italy, and New York State – then they came under control as people in these areas consistently practiced social distancing and mask wearing. Some areas didn’t have an initial outbreak --Texas, Florida, and Arizona – but social distancing and mask-wearing weren’t practiced –– and the virus there is now out of control.
Interestingly, in California people went into lockdown early and were it seems faithful in social distancing and mask wearing. The virus seemed under control. Recently the number of cases there has shot up. Dr. Bob Wachter, head of the Medical Dept at the University of California at San Francisco, said this month on National Public Radio 1 :
“The reason that we're surging here is not so much that it was inappropriate to begin opening up, but it's really the sum total of about 10 or 20 decisions a day that 40 million people are making. And if those people too often congregate too closely or choose not to wear masks, you're going to see an uptick in cases and hospitalizations the way we're seeing….
It really is about what we all choose to do, whether people keep their distance, avoid large gatherings and reliably wear masks. It's not that complicated if people can do that …”
Online articles this month agreed:
Seriously, Just Wear Your Mask
“This is not complicated, folks. It starts: Wear a mask. Seriously, just wear one. Almost any mask will do, really.” 2

This doctor, these publications, and these governors from both parties are saying: we know the right thing to do, and if we choose to do the right thing, we’ll be well. If we choose to do the wrong thing, we’ll get sick.
It’s interesting that we all have the free will to make the right choice. The choice goes, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore, choose life.” 6 It seems the creator made us with this free choice ability and is saying: “Doing right and staying well, or doing wrong and getting sick is up to you. Clearly nobody is forcing you to choose life instead of death. Your choice will be respected and not overturned.”
“Though you die from what you choose – I won’t overrule it. You only have the possibility to come into real maturity and love with me and others, if you continue to have your options. Making you be mature or making you love, wouldn’t result in you being mature or loving. I won’t make you robots, because I want you as friends.”
