Can Marriage Work?

No. 2 What is the Basis of Marriage?

by Ernest O'Neill

We are talking these mornings about marriage and yesterday we started by saying there is a difference between kinds of marriages. In other words, there is marriage and then again there is marriage. We said there was civil marriage, kind of casual, common law marriage (where you decide to live together) and Christian marriage. I said there was a vast difference between the three of them, especially between the Christian marriage and the civil or common law marriage.

We said the Christian marriage isn't just one completed in a church. Many of you have gone through a church wedding. Many of us have attended a white wedding of all kinds and yet they haven't been Christian marriages in the true sense of the word. A Christian marriage is one that is completed or consummated because it is God's will.

Belief in God

You remember I tried to deal with the thoughts you might have when you heard me saying that. Of course many of us said that put me out of the conversation because I'm an atheist or agnostic. I suggested it was hard to be an atheist or agnostic these days purely on an intellectual basis because the greatest intellects of our time believed the existence of a Superior Being of some kind was the only possible explanation of our world. Einstein said, "My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble minds. That deeply emotional conviction of the presence of a superior reasoning power which is revealed in the incomprehensible universe forms my idea of God." Of course, Darwin, who is looked upon as the father of evolution ended his great hypothesis or thesis called the Origin of the Species with these words: "There is grandeur in this view of life with its several powers having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one. Whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity from so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful and wonderful have been and are being evolved."

It is quite difficult to believe intellectually that there is no God. It's even difficult these days to say we don't know if there isn't a God or not. But it seems the belief in a God of some kind is the only possible explanation for the origin of the first single cell amoeba that eventually may have evolved into what we have today. Though evolution is a little difficult to receive as any explanation of the origin of the universe, it may at best partially explain how some of the universe developed after it was originally created. Even the Big Bang Theory presupposes there was something to make a big bang -- there was something that had to explode.

So I would ask you respectfully to be prepared to examine whether there is a God or not because that has a great bearing on marriage or the reason why you married or the reason why you would consider marrying another person. The difficulty we are having in marriage these days seems to come from the fact we are trying to carry on marriage on a basis that is different than the one it was originally set up by the Creator. In fact, the Creator has determined the constitution of our natures. If we are not carrying on something like marriage he initiated on the lines in which he planned at the beginning, then we are going to find ourselves constantly barking our shins at the sheer reality of our natures.

Knowing What is the Basis of Marriage is Vital

It is vital, you can see, to determine what the basis of marriage is so that we can understand how to carry it on in our own lives. It may be the great difficulty that many of us have in marriage in these days is because we are not carrying it on the way the Creator originally intended to be carried on. We are looking at it to get different things from what he originally intended us to derive from such an institution.

Perhaps that is a good place to begin that the only real basis for a marriage is the fact that our Maker intended two people to come together. You may say wait a minute, I had no idea of God, no belief in God when I first married. Indeed, today I have no belief in God and I hope to marry someone. Well how is my marriage going in any way to be God's intention for me.

There's no question the Creator can take even our errors and mistakes and work them into the counsel of his will. That we believe is written in his dealings with mankind down through the centuries. That he has been able in a remarkable way to take the mistakes and errors that people make and work them in to the counsel of his will. That's found in the Bible often that God works all things after the counsel of his will. [Ephesians 1:11]Probably you know the verse in Romans 8:28 which says "that all things work together for good to them that love God." As soon as a man or woman begins to be serious about God, God is able to begin to work even our mistakes and errors into the plan that he had for them at the beginning. It is a fact that God does not let anything happen in this universe that he himself is not able to redeem and to bring into the plan of his will for your own life. So even if you have married on the basis of something other than the fact it was God's will, God himself is able -- as soon as you begin to try to find out his will for your life -- to redeem the error or mistake and to bring it back to the original plan for you.

So perhaps you'd think a little about that today.
